I bow to no man.
The words are tattooed on my skin, just as they’re branded on my heart.
But I never planned for Sergeant Lincoln Asher, a man as deceptive as he is cold. His dominance sets my teeth on edge . . . and my body on fire. He won’t stop until I’m his, but I’m not his to take.
My secrets bind me—and blind me.
I live in the shadows of New Orleans. Hidden and protected in the underworld I call home. I know who I am.
I vow never to kneel before a man…
Save one.
And he will be my downfall.
“Excuse me?”
“My cards.” I lifted my gaze to her face. Shock resided in those hazel eyes of hers, as did distrust. She was right not to trust me—that was a fact. I cleared my throat. “Read my cards.”
Maria Luis is the author of sexy contemporary romances, though she may or may not have a few historical romances hiding in the cobwebs of her computer.
When she’s not writing about strong men and the sassy women who sweep them off their feet, Maria is a historian who specializes in medieval England and 19th century New Orleans. What do the two eras have in common, you ask? Not much, except for disease, scandalous activities, and crime–Maria’s favorite topics.
Maria lives in New Orleans with her better half, where she can generally be found hiking with her two dogs, Zeus and Athena, kayaking in Louisiana’s inter-coastal waterways, or curled up on the couch with a good book.

CHRIST ON A CRACKER was this book good. Like seriously, SO f-cking good! The writing was fantastic. It was very well paced. The plot was super engaging. It was told in a dual POV format. There were twists and turns. Secrets. Intrigue. Mystery. Danger. It was smokin’ hot. I LOVED the setting (New Orleans). Last, it ended in a shocking twist of a cliffhanger that I thought I saw coming (and I am STILL a little convinced I have some of it figured out) but left my mind totally f-cked.
~HERO~
LINCOLN..Good lord was this guy SEXY. Who doesn’t love a broody dirty cop who does bad things? I am fairly sure my tablet melted a few times. He was alpha. He was an a$$hole. He was all about Avery from the start. His character was an enigma wrapped in a mystery, and I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for Lincoln in the next book.
~HEROINE~
AVERY…Avery was more of an open book with regard to her character. Probably because we get more of her history and it is heartbreaking, to say the least. I loved Avery. She was feisty. She was strong. She was smart. She seemed to be a genuinely nice person. She had the hots for Sergeant Asher right from the start. I am looking forward to seeing what she gets up to in the next book as well.
~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~
This book was pretty light on secondary characters. I really liked Avery’s roommate though and hope we get to see more of her in the next book. Other than some baddies and random people she was pretty much it as this is a main character driven story.
~HEAT LEVEL~
Highish. There were quite a few smokin’ hot sex scenes in this one. A little voyeurism. I suspect we may see even more kink in book two (I hope). And this couple has AMAZING on page chemistry.
~ANGST LEVEL – SEXUAL HISTORIES~
Fairly low. I didn’t find this one particularly angsty, to be honest. It was pretty insta-lust and there really wasn’t much push or pull from either the hero or heroine. My one little issue was that Avery is a 25-year-old virgin (gaaah) <— can we PLEASE stop with the virgins in romance books…PLEASE?? I didn’t get the feeling Lincoln was a manwhore, but neither was he a saint (lol). There really isn’t too much said about his sexual past. There was no OW or OM drama.
~IN THE END~
I LOVED it. So much in fact that I am not even going to deduct any stars for the whole “virgin” annoyance. (lol) Fantastic writing. Fast paced. Intriguing plot. Interesting and well-developed characters. Hot sex scenes. Not much left for me to say about this one. Bring on book two!
